We were awful, ball in the air, no width up front, what a shambles

I guess the 2 week break was spent on an entirely different style of play. Very direct, ball in the air. If it keeps us up I can live with that. The team sheet hinted at that, 11 physical, defensive, players with character. A good start saw the direct approach (Barry through ball) put Hutchinson in who did so well to shrug off the defender and get himself in the perfect position, only to play it into the keeper. The ball was rarely on the ground for the first half and at 0-0 half time we had been the better team, although they also had a couple of chances.
Then it was another of our second halves. Go a goal down and belief disappears. I don’t blame anyone for not yet mastering the art of playing long, direct football within a few weeks, but what frustrated me was how we forgot the value of a few good passes entirely. Our poor strikers were tasked with plucking balls from the sky, often on the touch line, with nobody close to them for support. So many times it was pumped up from bad positions, when a bit of patience makes for a better angle.
The lineup meant we had no attacking threat from the wings. Full backs who are often centre backs and Bendle a central player as our right wing. As the need for goals got more urgent I’d have liked Leon and Sesay on as wing backs.
Still, this was against a team at the higher end of the table and I’m sure they were worried at half time. It was far from our worst performance or team of the season. But very easy for Chelmsford second half.
I was desperate for Finny to get subbed. He didn’t do badly but with a game Tuesday and his injury record it was crazy to leave him on. As it went on he made a few errors (fair enough after such a long injury) and then he got a red, so misses Tuesday anyway.
Hoping Brad is ok, he looked uncomfortable when he came off.
One final positive is I think Ben in goal is doing well under the new manager. He does the sweeper keeper thing so well for non League.
Let’s hope we can add a bit of style on Tuesday. Actually let’s just win.
