Eastbourne Borough Ryman 18s reached the quarter finals of the Sussex Bluefin Dennis Probee youth cup on Sunday with a hard fought extra time win over Worthing at Priory Lane.
With both teams missing players on an unusual Sunday morning kick off for Ryman League teams the game turned out to be a close encounter. Boro took the lead when U16 keeper Oli Cornford cleared to skipper James Coyle whose pass found ex Academy player Tobi Clifford on the edge of the box . His through ball was taken with one touch and finished with his next by another good u16 prospect Alex Bralsford on 15 minutes.
Both Bralsford and Clifford had good chances to put the tie to bed but poor defending and failure to close down quick enough let Worthing back in to the game on 35 minutes with a shot from 18 yards.
The second half came and went with the home side having more of the ball but Worthing always looking dangerous on the break.
Both sides used up all their subs with enforced changes through injury and with Will Fermer and Jordan Astell struggling with a badly gashed knee and blisters extra time was always going to be tough. But Boro won an early free kick 20 yards out with 6 minutes gone in the first period and new dead ball specialist Coyle found his range after hitting the bar in the 90 minutes and curled a brilliant shot round the wall and past the current Sussex 'keeper.
Worthing kept going but James Stone settled it with 10 minutes to go with a powerful shot into the corner after beating his full back.
