A hat - trick by free scoring midfielder Corey Wheeler gave Eastbourne Borough Ryman 18s a scrappy victory against local rivals Eastbourne Town in a very eventful derby away at The Saffrons last night (Monday)
The away side started slowly and looked like they expected the Town lads, bottom of the Ryman League and winless all season, to roll over and give them the points. Town, it seems, had other ideas and went ahead on 7 minutes when the Boro defence stood off and let a shot come in which found the corner of George Leggs net. Worse was to come after 10 when the Boro back four failed to pick up again and another shot went in to make it 2 - 0.
This seemed to animate the already fired up Town lads, and instead of keeping it steady for 10 minutes and shutting a shell-shocked Boro side out of the game they proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot.
Firstly the predicted fight (on social media a few hours before the game) followed a good hard but fair tackle by Reds right back Dom Haward. In front of a raucous crowd of 145 and the away dugout the ball went out for a Town throw but before it could be taken a clear, totally unprovoked head butt found Doms cheekbone. Then, on around the 20 minute mark, another tackle in midfield led to a small scuffle and Clayton Holford (an ex Boro 18) received a second yellow for raising his hands to the also booked Mitch Light.
Obviously with 70 minutes to go Boro now expected to get back into the game but continued with the sluggish display and only got back to 2 -1 before the half time whistle with Coreys first goal.
An emotional discussion in the Reds dressing-room cleared the air and a defensive re-shuffle saw flying winger Jacob Marsh come on for the slightly concussed Dom as a more attacking full back.
The visitors stretched the Town lads early on in the second half and equalised through Corey on 47 minutes. With all of the ball and Jacob Merrick running the midfield Boro won corner after corner and after 64 minutes one of these was taken short to skipper George Carroll who drilled the ball across goal and into the net to take the lead.
Just to add to the evenings entertainment a streaker emerged from the crowd at this point and held up play for a few minutes. Unfortunately the fee gained from his exploits (rumoured to be around £30) was confiscated by Town officials and given to charity!
After the interruption a decent Boro move was finished off by Corey wrapping the game up and finishing off a great hat - trick on 73 with a well taken goal.
Overall a win and a much needed run out before Worthing visit the Lane for a much tougher test next Wednesday 29th.
