Eastbourne Borough Ryman 18s won their first game of the season with a hard fought win at home to Three Bridges on Monday.
On the night Len Smith stepped down as Chairman the Committee, First team, Academy and Development Centre bosses were all at hand to see the boys win 5 -2 at home with a hard - working display at a warm but damp Priory Lane.
A penalty in the third minute for holding gave Skipper John Reeves a chance to settle the first night nerves but after he coolly slotted the ball away for the next 10 minutes Boro seemed a bit sluggish. The postponement of last weeks friendly didn't help and Three Bridges battled their way back into the match with a great left footed strike from 25 yards to make it 1-1 after 15.
The visitors could have taken the lead minutes later when a sliced clearance forced keeper Ollie Cornford into a world class one handed save and a coming together with the Bridges centre back that left Reeves nursing a suspected broken nose seemed to wake up the Reds and after 25 minutes it was MOM Jacob Merrick who took charge and started pulling the strings in midfield. He slotted Chris Hutchins in for the second and just before half time Jordan Astell scored from close range after Charlie Morley had put the ball across.
Tom Clift replaced the concussed Reeves at half time and the visitors came out fighting and never gave up but Astells second following up from a Merrick shot and James Sergi Stone's strike from the edge of the box kept breathing space between the teams.
Bridges got a consolation after confusion in the Boro box late on but the Reds were always dangerous on the break and ran out worthy 5 -2 winners.
