...been there, done that, got the T - shirt Blue Square Premier club York City will have a new pitch to play on next season as the repairs being made to Kit-Kat Crescent will be completed next week. Minstermen boss Billy McEwan and his squad used the poor quality of the pitch as an excuse for their poor home form last season, but new groundsmen Mark Hirst is confident over the state of the new pitch. The first test of the new pitch will come on July 14 when Leeds visit for a pre-season friendly. Hirst, who teamed up with his assistant groundsman Kevin Russell and retired head groundsman Brian Horner, installed a new drainage system over the summer aimed at aiding the pitches ability to remove surface water. The club are also looking to find a solution for the problem of compacted soil by putting in additional repair work in October of this year and March of next year. Hirst, who worked as assistant greenskeeper at Pike Hills Golf Club, told yorkpress.co.uk: "The pitch is perking up lovely. "It's been hollow-cored ten inch and we have scarified it in two directions diagonally. "We've then filled it with quality root zone and over-seeded it. Our last job is to turf the bad areas up. "We've done the maintenance work to get the drains in and linked to the existing ones and we had a bit of rain last weekend and it didn't stand on the surface. "That's no promise that will be the case over winter but it's a good sign. "The pitch has greened up and we've also put drains in down from the dugouts to the David Longhurst Stand which will hopefully alleviate the water situation in that area. "We've got four games on the bounce in July and August and it will be ready for them. "It's all been an eye-opener to me but if you like your job you thrive on a situation like this." About the extra work which will need to be put in over the season, Hirst added: "At the beginning of October when the ground should still be quite firm, we will be using a new machine that shatters the soil where it has formed a compact layer to get water through the drains during autumn and winter. "It costs £1,500 for a contractor to come in with one application and the plan is for another application in March when the pitch dries up again." source: www.footballconference.co.uk

Well there you go. Thats whats known as 'a plan' AND 'information to supporters' !! Yes a plan... but how much did York City spend on it, bearing mind they are a Premier league team and have been up there for a while with larger gates than us... They have a good sponsor for the ground ie Kit Kat and i can bet that brings in a lot of revenue, ( certainly more than we will ever see from Eastbourne Borough Council) I hate to imagine the cost of a NEW PITCH as they have got! As you carry on reading the article, you will notice that the groundsman isnt actuallly sure if the work will prove positive until it gets tested by bad weather!!! I also note that they are going to have mid term treatment along the lines of breaking compacted ground... Is this the same as the treatment Len talked about in his posting and Herald interview?? If it is then we must be doing something right!!! We too are going to have to wait and see ..... I think this posting and thread has run its course now.... IMO !!! As for " information to supporters" we now have the new website up and running so that will provide us with what we need to know i am sure... Maybe some posters on here think we should have a 24 hour hotline !! How many would use a premium rate clubcall??? I know we used to have one , but most use the internet now so guess thats why it became defunct... I personally am happy with the info we have received thru the summer, and lets face it, the quiet time of football, and we all seem to gather gossip thru here too!!

some people do get on my tits..if we could afford to cure our pitch problems don,t you think we would..i can,t imagine the commitee being happy about all the cancelled games we had to cram it to the last 2 weeks of the season..yes it was peeing down for a fortnight but **** happens and we can,t change that..give the club some slack,if you don,t get upto the minute information big deal its not the end of the world..overall all i would like to see some one do better if they could.. the time and effort a lot of people put in for nothing is fantastic and they should be appreciated and not knocked after all they are doing it for you as well...

I also believe that there is another famous adage in life ... Spend more than you earn and you are in the brown stuff!!! So all you do is come here to wind up then is it Silverfox!! Constructive discussions are always a good thing, but to admit you come on to wind up fellow supporters over club matters, well its pathetic at best, and down right disrespectful to the other forum posters, club officials et al!

Oooh I am sorry convertedeagle. Still your reply proves my point.
In all seriousness though I don't really come on to wind people up but to provoke some proper discussion about a football club that I do care about.
Some of the threads on here are not lively enough to get the juices flowing so a bit of a spark is needed now and again. You can hardly say I am alone in being worried about the pitch, wondering if we have come as far as we can, lack of information from the club, to name the main three.
So what if I said I believe that the manager and coach have also gone as far as they can. Done brilliantly to date, no arguement, but have they the ideas, skill and contacts to take this team into professional football??
I personally doubt it but I expect that if they can hold their own in this league then that suits the clubs present ambition.
So there we go converted eagle, not a wind up, just an opinion for discussion. Have a good weekend.

As Jim has stated, "the pitch" discussion has been well and truly done, but it is symbolic of where the Club go from here: financial means, planning for the future and how effective is communication with supporters, to name a few. I feel that County / Rymans Football League Teams can be placed in one category, but, Blue Square South / North / Premier are in another category. When a Team moves up from one to the other the rubicon is crossed; the pyramid is climbed and things get more serious. Am I wrong? Of course you'd have to be blind to not know that to have gotten this far, the people behind the Club must be a shrewd bunch. They have taken some sublime decisions interspersed with some fortuitous results on the pitch, e.g.- Dr Martens Premier final League position that went to the wire; Conf South Play Off berth position obtained due to Dorchester getting spanked by Bognor 7 - 1 when we lost 4 - 1 by Carshalton on the final day of the season.
My point is that everything revolving around the Club is ratcheted up, and that includes the supporters interest and passion and thirst for information and a hope that the Club could become more inclusive. As it is stated on here on more than one thread: "...well at the end of the day it is Len's (and the Committees) Club" So, I don't think that SilverFox is on here for a wind up. The questions are borne out of a real interest to seek and probe more information, though laced with a generous dollop of sarcasm. I guess what will happen will happen, we will read it in the Herald as it happens, and judge the Football Club on a game by game basis 2007 - 8. This time next year we will know where the Club are going.
