Hi all,
PLEASE FIND A CUT AND KEEP GUIDE TO OUR BSP COVERAGE THIS SEASON - WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE
This is a complex and technical note as it tries to answer a whole host of questions thrown up by all our BSP message boards over the summer. KEEP this note - I won't be writing it again!!!
[be]** IMPORTANT:- As you can see from last night's example of commentary options, BBC Local radio is now offering a near-comprehensive service of Conference football. I have spent the summer leading a working party to try and maximise the on-line commentaries while minimising the costs to each station's budget. [/be] I'm so sorry the Stevenage link didn't work for you - its out of our hands on the night, but i will flag it up today.

BBC SCR COMMENTARY POLICY
Our aim is to make an online commentary available for each of our four sides each time they play midweek - home or away. It will be provided by either our own commentators or the opposing team's BBC Local radio station. There will be the odd game we just can't cover. There will be a list of all of the country's weekly BSP commentaries posted on our bbc.co.uk/southerncounties/sport homepage index. There will also be a special list of our own BBC Southern Counties coverage plans on the "What's on" link on the right hand side of the page (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_radio/7178746.stm) updated regularly.
** NOTE - We have chosen to provide full online commentaries once again INSTEAD of brief radio updates into the Roger Day show. Its technically difficult to provide both commentary and updates (BBC Kent do it easily as their commentaries are going through the BBC Kent building where Roger Day broadcasts from); also, this season - with 4 BBC SCR sides playing + 2 x BBC Kent + 1 x BBC Solent ... live reports on all would drown Roger's show!)
Weekend BSP commentary provision is harder due to the strain it puts on our ISDN line infrastructure. Each commentary provided takes up two lines. Therefore we will try and rotate which team commentary we provide on our "listen live" button. That game will be chosen from any one of 5 criteria 1) the best "game of the day" 2) the furthest away game for fans to travel 3) a game not being provided for online by any other station 4) its that team's turn 5) our staffing availabilities. We have decided it is not possible to be led consistenly by any one of these criteria - you'll have to trust us to make what we feel is the best decision for that day!
"LISTEN LIVE" COMMENTARIES
Because the BBC does not have any Football league internet rights (Aldershot and Brighton), that means we must block their commentaries from going onto the website. We've chosen to "block" them by placing a BSP commentary in that 1500-1700 space instead (sadly we have only one "listen Live " button for both Surrey and Sussex, so we can only offer one cross-patch commentary choice).
On the majority of occasions, that commentary audio will simply be a feed of that reporter's line from the ground. That is why it will not include any other reports from other games. I know it sounds a bit strange; especially as for alot of saturdays' this season, ex-pats etc listening on the "listen Live" from 2 o'clock will hear the Surrey Saturday Sport show 1400-1500 and 1700-1800, but between 1500 and 1700 you'll get Lewes, Eastbourne Borough or Crawley commentary with no Woking or Aldershot updates at all. We feel - again - that this is all better than simply blocking the webstream with silence.
PRE-MATCH AND POST-MATCH INTERVIEWS
We will play manager post match rx between 1700 and 1800 each week (tehcnical problem last saturday - not had a good week have you on facing tehcnical glitches!)
We are putting more resources into uploading pre-match interviews and post-match reaction onto the bbc.co.uk/southerncounties/sport website. The pre-match ones should be there to hear on Fridays and saturday morning before you travel to games. The post-match ones are submitted for publishing straight after the matches on the Saturday night, but have to be published by a central team in Birmingham - NOTE:- we are one station, publishing 6 interviews just ourselves. They have 39 stations doing similar quantities, so they will be published by about Sunday afternoon each week. (The more hits they get, the more they might invest in extra staff for these times!)
FANS REACTION
Despite Aldershot's arrival in the Football league, we are technically unable to provide both a Sussex Fans Phone-in and a Saturday Sport (Surrey and Hants) phone-in.
With Sussex now having four big teams, it makes senses to continue with the established "Sussex phone-in". PLEASE do all take advantage of it, both with texts and calls. It is not a Brighton-only show.
To supplement your wonderful patronage of these club forum sites, we are also looking to boost the profile of your team on the BBC 606 "My team" online site, so please take part in adding your thoughts tgo the respective pre-match and post-match threads by our club commentators each week (next lot going up friday).
We are always looking to improve our product, so feel free to email me with any problems/suggestions/queries any time this season - tim.durrans@bbc.co.uk
Cheers Tim
