Eastbourne Borough Ryman 18s continued their run of good form with a tough 2-1 win at The Pilot Field Hasting on Thursday (16th) night.
While Boro decided to blood a few more youngsters and started with only 4 second years Hastings seemed to have a different side out from the thumping at Priory Lane and included a Boro academy player and another lad that has appeared at first team level this season.
A bit of complacency and lack of the usual quick passing and movement let Hastings start quickly without threatening too much but the first real chance of the game fell to Jordan Astell which went wide from a James Stone pass.
The home sides high tempo, workrate and strong tackling continued to put the yellows off their game and local lad Astell was singled out for special treatment throughout the half.
Hastings had a decent shot on 25 minutes and 5 later u16 Ratton Rangers winger Harry Blackman set up Astell again from the right but Boro's shooting boots seemed to have deserted them. Jacob Merrick then blazed over after good work from Astell and the last chance of the half fell to the home side but Elliot Stokes in the Boro goal smothered a weak shot.
A few minutes after half time Stone went wide from a Jack Buchanan pass and as Boro seemed to be getting into the game they were hit by a sucker punch as Hastings won the ball back in midfield and scored on the hour.
Character has never been in question in this Boro group and 2 minutes after the home side took the lead Blackman curled a cross in for Merrick to equalize.
With Hastings tiring and Boro moving the ball a lot better by trying to play 3 touch football gaps appeared and Astell was brought down inside the box on 70 minutes. Skipper John Reeves stepped up to calmly put the spot kick away.
A chance for each side came to nothing and Boro were able to give yet another U16 Alex Brailsford minutes as they saw the game out to win another game on their travels and move to fourth in the table with one match left at home to Lewes next Monday (20th) at 7:45.
