Eastbourne Borough Ryman 18s bounced back from their disappointing loss at Worthing with 3 points at local rivals Lewes on Thursday night. (April 2nd) .
Due to holidays, football tours, work and coaching commitments Boro' fielded a side with 6 changes from last week and for the first 20 minutes struggled to find their usual passing game. Just as they started to settle Lewes played a simple ball down the left channel which the winger had time to cross to a free player in the box and the visitors were behind.
The rest of the half was mainly Boro giving the ball away and defending as Lewes attacked and they probably should have gone in with more than the solitary goal to their name. One half chance in 45 minutes for Nick Richardson and one cross from the hard working Jordan Astell which flashed across the six yard box were the only highlights for the yellows.
Any number of players could have been replaced at half-time but two changes were made and a slight re arrangement in formation meant that Boro started on the front foot and immediately forced the home side to rush their passes and were hurried into mistakes in their own half.
After 65 substitute Jack Buchanan won the ball in midfield and released Richardson down the left and his cross was met by England Futsal trialist Astell to tuck away for the equaliser.
Buchanan and other sub Harry Blackman were causing problems with their vision and pace and another U16 Patrick Dallaway was introduced for slightly concussed Will Fermer in midfield to help keep the ball moving and finding yellow shirts suddenly seemed much easier.
An over hit free kick from John Reeves around the half way line took a lucky bounce over the Lewes keeper and made it 2-1 with 10 to go but Lewes were far from finished. The goal they conceded woke them up and the returning from injury Boro keeper Harrison Hilfiker had to be at his best to tip a fierce shot away at full stretch. He had no chance however when a disputed penalty given by the linesman on the far side was smashed past him to make it 2-2 .
A draw would probably been a fair result but a spirited Boro side showed great character to win a corner on the 90th minute and a good deep delivery from Buchanan was met with a brilliant header from Reeves to nick the 3 points.
A good game and two young sides playing good football the right way. Boro finished with 4 U16s playing, 3 first years and only 4 second years so a quality side already developing for next season.
