Quick debate, if anyone's interested: Should Andy Gray have been sacked? (bias aside about whether you like him or not) Sian Massey, the referee at the centre of the row, is now officiating the BBS match between Corby and Eastwood on Saturday. "Massey was scheduled to be an official at Crewe versus Bradford in League Two on Tuesday night, but was withdrawn by the authorities in order to ensure that the controversy surrounding her did not overshadow the game." news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_conf/9376915.stmWas this a bit of fun or "banter", as the Former England women's cricket captain Rachel Heyhoe-Flint would call it, or is it something more damaging and reflective of the nature of football at the moment? news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/9371642.stm

My view:
Difficult not to be biased seeing as he's a bit of an idiot. I think the type of work he's in makes it difficult for him to stay on. It'll probably be forgotten in a few weeks but for now it'd only do considerable damage to Sky's reputation not to sack him IMO.
Unfortunate for Gray (and Keys)? yes. Right decision? Probably.

At first I laughed & saw it as the sad remarks of a sad old bloke & no doubt the ref herself has heard it all before. BUT, if the remarks were about the skin colour of a ref then we wouldn't feel so comfortable with trivialising it.

It's no different to banter on the terraces on a Saturday afternoon... it's not like it was said on air and they were malicious and said in a threatening way, just a laugh between two boys who have worked with eachother for the last 20 years. I'll miss you Andy!

My opinion is that if SM is good enough to run the line for a Liverpool game then she's good enough, end of; race, creed, colour, gender and all the rest have nothing to do with it. It's like any job, if you're good enough, then you are good enough.
It appears that Grey and Keys are quick enough to comment on other people's abilities - but their comments, not only in this case but any other involving referees and their (perceived) mistakes, might be more credible if THEY have qualified as referees, AND, (their ages apart) were considered good enough to officiate at a Premiership match
Well, have they?
And the inevitable side question, to answer the Grey-Keys comment: how many commentators, managers know the offside rule well enough to be able to make an instant decison, without the benefit of a multitude of camera angles, slo-mo, etc? Not as many as think they do, I bet. And how many commentators, managers, players have QUALIFIED as referees?
They can dish it out, but as Corporal Jones was fond of saying "they don't (seem to) like it up 'em".

The thing is, where ever that young lady turns up to do her job she will be watched like a hawk, every decision she calls will be evaluated, assessed and then assessed again which is wrong in comparrison to what male officials get away with, how many ridiculous offsides have been given against boro this season by male lino's? I'm all for female officials, they can't be any worse than the men. Humans are going to make mistakes no matter what gender they are. And finally, yes they were right to sack andy gray, good riddance i say.

Good to hear your views - and good point you bring up there corracreigh, Gray and Keys were brilliant referees with the the benefit of hindsight and slow-mo replays!

Don't know if anyone else has noticed that on twitter andygrayHD doesn't appear to like people who think he was wrong with his sexist antics, i have been told to 's*d off' and call a 't**t'. Many others have also been on the recieving end of the foul mouthed gray. Nice and professional really. At least he's got his job though.

The pair of dinosaurs are now on talkSport and oddly they both seem very reluctant to put to air any live callers... their first show actually featured no phone calls whatsoever!!!
On the bright side, if you suffer from insomnia in the day, these two will send you to sleep in minutes with their mono tonal voices....

Didn't realise talkSPORT could get much more annoying! Would've been some quite amusing phone calls had they allowed them nonetheless!
