Played this yesterday under the name of Eastbourne Boro Supporters - we represented you guys!! Won 5 of the 6 round robin matches to make it to the final where we unfortunatey lost to Tobi Hutchison's all stars which had an array of ex county league players. Considering none of us play competetive football anymore we kept going in the heat and did ourselves proud.
Well done to Tobi and his team but through this board thankyou to the familes who turned up to support us. Very proud of my players who were a pleasure to manage for the day. I can hardly walk this morning!

Hi fellas, well done on your performances yesterday, it was a really enjoyable day. Hopefully no one was 'cheesed off' by the fact that our team consisted of several ex players alongside myself. We never for a moment entered with the intention of being 'big time charlies' in any way.
We did try and keep with the spirit of things throughout the day. We had fun, messed about and laughed at each other!!! Hopefully...I would like to think that some people there enjoyed playing against us even.
We had planned on entering a team for a while and really had no idea what sort of standard to expect and simply went there for a days fun with players/mates that maybe hadnt played with for a while. Mark Simpson hadnt played for 4/5 years, Kenny Mackay longer(!), Richy Booth hasnt played for 2 years because of knee problems and Jason Morley hasnt kicked a ball in anger for 2 years! I didnt play a full game all day i dont think...and most eastbourne football supporters think im rubbish anyway ;D ;D
Anyway like i say it was an enjoyable day and hopefully it was appreciated that we were there for fun just like anyone else and for Kenny, Simmo, Morley etc it really was just an opportunity to pull on some boots with mates they'd not played football with for quite a while.
Cheers and well done on how well you did.

Hi Tobi, We also thought it would it would be a fun day for a few mates to get together and have a kick about. To get to the final for us was a real bonus and I hope the people who stayed on to watch it enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed playing in it against you and your team. Must admit my heart sunk when I saw the teams competing but from what I saw you took every game seriously as well as keeping in the spirit of the day - the same attitude as we took. You certainly gave us respect in both games we played against you and it was good to pick our wits against such well known names in Sussex football.
In my mind the best team on the day won but more importantly it was a good day out enjoyed by all.

JK, did your performance against Jay Lovett and Marc Whiteman at the Pan a year ago stand you in good stead for Tobi and his veteran ringers??? ;D

Hi Andrew, that was hard work yesterday! It was harder marking Tobi yesterday as I recall Marc Whiteman was in my pocket for the game we played against them!!!!

Yeah marking Tobi must be tough, given the devastating bursts of pace that he's well known for! ;D

Yeah marking Tobi must be tough, given the devastating bursts of pace that he's well known for! ;D Im 36 in a few weeks Andrew. Fancy your chances over 30 yards??? Or maybe put a team together for next year and mark me yourself? Very easy to underestimate strength and pace to the naked eye from the touchline. Not re nowned for speed but i can assure you im not exactly cumbersome!! 250 goals from a forward with NO pace aint bad Seem to remember you commenting on how a favourite of yours...Brownie....might find it easy outpacing me only to not get near the ball all game when we were directly opposing each other in the centre of the park in a Town v Hailsham derby. Not that imtaking the bait at all ;D

Particularly remember a good solo goal of yours at the Beaconsfield a few years back (v Wick???). And although I'm better defensively than going forward, there's no way in this world I'd keep up with you, even when you're 56! I've got decent flat speed over 50 yards, but I'd be knackered after that! A mutual friend of ours, Ken McEwan, gave you a going over in the Herald 7 or 8 years ago about battling and running, or something like that. Your letter in reply was one of the first things I typed up on my first day of work experience at the paper, as a 14-year-old There, bet that makes you feel old Don't remember the specific comment re: Brownie - although it does sound like something I'd say! Seeing as you clearly have a good memory, do you remember (as I do) an exchange between yourself and Ken McCreadie at Whitehawk season before last (Tuesday night in August), when you had, shall we say, a difference of opinion as to who was meant to be picking up whom. It ended something along the lines of Kenny saying: "Well f***ing run after him then", and you shouted back: "Oh Ken you know I can't do that!" ;D

Looks like there will be another tournament next year. Perhaps you can cobble a team together Andrew?! After seeing some of my team last night we should just about be back to full fitness by next July!

I bet that made your fingers hurt typing that letter! I remember that exchange with Kenny well.....I didnt dare answer him back often! Still find it strange though that people expect someone who is slow to run fast and yet never ask the hard working talentless to beat 3 players on a run or split a defence with a single pass It always seems lack of ability is more acceptable than lack of anything else? Heres a good example...played for a local manager once (quite recently) who said of a player in his team "I like him, he gives the ball away alot but he always wins it back"! I told him to give him his own ball and to play on his own then, for all the good he would be to us! Needless to say i got a transfer soon after ;D ;D ;D ;D

My priority for what i see as the next 'few' years remains playing. I set myself 3 main sets of criteria......a) Form be) Enjoyment c) Fitness. All the time i maintain those 3 i will keep playing.
So far it looks ok!! Im still mulling over 3 offers and just in case they read this i cant say which 3 clubs the are but needless to say they arent Eastbourne clubs!
As far as coaching goes......Billy Wheatley singlehandedly took away any desire i had in that direction for the time being and from the day i last spoke to him until today, every cone and bib i own has been in my Dads garage!
My eldest boy is six and loves his football so sunday mornings will be busy with him for the foreseeable! Loves a tackle and runs about like a loony....he will go far!

There's room in every team for the slower, skilful players with an eye for a pass (and a decent free-kick, eh Tobi? ) and those who do the box-to-box scampering and get stuck in at every opportunity. Perhaps the higher up you go in the pyramid, the more physical demands coaches put on their players, but certainly at most non-league levels, a decent side IMO would mix creativity with hard work. Kenny Mac's Hailsham side last season was full of hard work and endeavour - people like Ashley Jarvis wouldn't stop running until the final whistle - and they were as fit as anything. But in some games I watched them in, all they needed to turn a draw into a win was a creative spark, which they sometimes seemed to lack. The reverse perhaps might be said for last season's Eastbourne Town team - plenty of creativity, but maybe not enough people willing to do the ugly stuff and get stuck in in midfield. It's doing that which enables you to build the base for solid attacks IMO. Now how's that for a layman's view of County League tactics??? ;D

Well I was extremely unfit before that Lewes tournament last year so hopefully if I start preparing now I might be somewhere near half-decent come next July!

I help out my brother with a local boys team. I really get a lot out of it as they are a good set of lads. Will be under 15's this season. Don't like the way the actual club is run but our team keep ourselves to ourselves which is how we like it. Don't let a bad experience put you off as some team will no doubt benefit greatly from whtat you have to offer whether it be at youth or senior level.

Yeah pretty good i reckon. You must've taken that letter in ;D ;D
The only difference id make is that higher up the pyramid is where the higher skill level becomes more important and the work ethic becomes 'a given' that everyone will possess it. I found, in my brief spell at Sutton (who were then level in the pyramid as Boro are now) that if my 1st touch was good then i invariably had more time on the ball, rather than the crash bang wallop of defenders tackling when there really is no need to. The hard bit was once you had time on the ball then the positional sense of defenders made it so much harder to exploit the time you had on it! Hence the increase skill factor required. A good example was maybe Darren Pearce. As Boro got higher the impact his endeavour had on a game became less and less. That said, like you say every team needs players willing to be ugly (nothing personal Darren!).

I heard someone say once that the better the first touch, the more expensive the player!

I like that. Thats the sort of view id have as a coach or manager.
Unfortunately for me most managers in Eastbourne over the last 15 years have said it doesnt matter if you can trap it further than you can kick it as long as you throw yourself at the tackle for your 2nd touch!
