Just as last years game at Worthing made you wonder at the strange unpredictable nature of football (we went down there after getting beat 6 - 0 at Burgess Hill and won 1-0 after being battered for 90 minutes) Yesterdays (Monday) game was just as unfair.
Full of confidence on a five game unbeaten streak Boro started well and after 15 Charlie Mackay had the first of the visitors many many chances.
On 21 James Stone beat four Worthing players brilliantly and his shot smacked against the post but Toby Clifford put the follow up wide from 6 yards out.
It looked like only a matter of time before the yellows would score but a mix up between two men in midfield led to a speculative shot from 25 yards hitting an awful bobble and bouncing fully two feet over 'keeper Ollie Cornfords outstretched hands to make it 1 -0 to Worthing....
On the half hour Boro hit the post again and the follow up was saved from point blank range by the home sides MOM again. Then Nick Richardson was clean through one on one and the normally reliable top scorer was foiled by another dodgy bounce when just about to pull the trigger.
Half time came and went with not a lot to say in the dressing room as the first half had been brilliant apart from one mistake.
The home stopper made another point blank save from Richardson after a Jordan Astell flick on 50 and Astell forced him into another save a minute later. On 55 he was tipping a goalbound shot round the post which hit another bobble and on 56 John reeves put a header just over the bar.
Boro MOM Chris Hutson picked a yellow on the hour and Astell hit the bar again in the same minute. 2 minutes later great work from Stone led to another shot from Astell being saved and Mackay hit the follow up across the goal and wide.
A James Coyle shot from a set piece routine to the back post went wide on 65 and Worthing went up the other end and a shot on the turn crept into the corner of the Boro net on 70. Stone still had time to force the keeper to make yet another save but on 80 a mishit cross from the left floated agonisingly over Cornford to nestle in the corner off the post.
A brilliant performance from the Boro lads and three u16s got on for valuable minutes and experience so loads of plus's from an amazingly frustrating evening.
Just reading that back confirms how much I thought we had dominated!
