Eastbourne Borough u18s got a deserved point at home to Whitehawk on Monday (5th) with two very late goals...
Whitehawk, with ex first team star Sam El Abd in charge, came prepared to defend and take a point and did so but probably not in the way they thought in a roller coaster game at the Lane.
For the first ten minutes both sides were testing each other out and Whitehawk altered their formation to counter Boro's strong midfield. But just as the home side were getting on top a break and a great strike from 25 yards evaded keeper Elliot Stokes and put Hawks one up.
Chris Hutson, England schoolboys international Jacob Merrick and Toby Clifford had a lot of the ball in the middle but couldn't break through or play the ball through to their forwards. Clifford found a lot of space out wide and had a couple of efforts from distance but the inticate passing moves came to nothing and even when England Futsal trialist Jordan Astell rounded the keeper and pulled the ball back he found no-one backing up to finish.
The half continued with Boro having most of the ball and playing well but were caught on the counter with a long clearance which went over skipper John Reeves and before Stokes could react the visitors striker expertly lobbed the ball over him to make it 2 - 0 at the break.
A team talk about movement up top and the final ball at half time ringing in Boro's ears seemed to spark them into a quick start and two crosses flew across Whitehawk's 6 yard box evading Jordan and Charlie Morleys efforts to reach them.
New signing Nick Richardson came on for the under the weather Morley and Boro got one back on the hour when Hutson picked the ball up 30 yards out, beat two or three players and smashed the ball in from the edge of the box.
Hopes of a quick comeback were seemingly dashed when another Hawks counter led to the ball being bundled in after a shot had cannoned off the bar.
Livewire Charlie Mackay came on as the reds changed to an attacking 3-5-2 chasing the game but with undeserved red cards for each team and stout defending with Boro camped in the visitors half it looked like the points were going back to Brighton.
James Stone came on for holding midfielder Tom Clift as Boro threw everything forward and on 89 minutes Richardson won a free kick which he took himself and curled round the wall for 2-3. Then in a final dramatic twist, straight from the restart, Whitehawk played a short pass back to the edge of the centre circle which was intercepted and quickly sent up to Richardson who evaded two strong challenges and slotted coolly into the net for the equalizer.
Another great game at the Lane for the supporters who gave both teams a deserved ovation on the way down the tunnel.
