Eastbourne Borough Ryman u18s slipped out of the Lucas Fettes League cup on Monday night after a 1 - 0 home defeat to Horsham.
The 'reds started quickly and could have been ahead after 2 minutes when Charlie Morley was foiled by a one handed save by an outstanding 'keeper when clean through.
For 25 minutes the teams were well matched but a few decisions started to go against 'Boro and instead of getting tetchy with the officials they raised their game and started to dominate. With both fans and committee purring about the home sides passing game and the midfield playing lovely tiki taka football in and around the Horsham box it looked like only a matter of time before they took the lead.
Unfortunately the Horsham stopper had other ideas.. He denied 'Boro 4 or 5 times in the first half and we will never know how he would have dealt with his team down to ten men when James Stone was tripped on the edge of the penalty area when clean through as the referee neglected to send the visitors defender off even after consulting with his linesman! He even forgot to even book the lad...
Horsham got their goal when two corners in quick succession at the end of the half resulted in an aerial challenge that left home keeper and centre half Elliot Stokes and James Coyle on the floor while the ball was bundled into the net.
A heated discussion between both sets of coaches and officials at the whistle which continued into the tunnel and the referees room seemed to fire up 'Boro and for most of the second half it was a competition between the Horsham goalie and every other red player on the park. 6 or 7 times he made decent saves and one from Morley which was destined for the top corner until he fingertipped it onto the post was unbelievable.
Charlie Mackay had a goal disallowed wrongly for offside late on and John Reeves blasted a free kick over the bar in the last few seconds but it just wasn't to be.
