Eastbourne Borough Ryman u18s twice played a Bognor side fully recovered from their County Cup final loss and came away pointless home and away.
Home -
Bognor had stuttered in their last two after losing to Burgess Hill and Borough were confident going in to the home game on a four game winning streak. The reds started strongly but failed to trouble the visitors keeper. After 25 minutes Bognor scored with almost their first attack and for the rest of the half Boro, for all their endeavour , struggled to break down a good back four.
The final ball was missing and the stats of only one shot on target and 25 misplaced passes showed what a poor performance it was. Bognor got a penalty in the 65th minute to seal their victory and it was only after this goal and 3 substitutions that Boro stepped it up a bit. Final score 0-2
Away-
Borough travelled all the way to Wick for the return game with Bognor with only 12 fit and available players but put in a fantastic performance for 80 minutes shipping 3 goals in the last 10 when they ran out of legs.
A change of formation to nullify Bognor's tactics worked brilliantly and Boro went in after 45 all square with the home side getting frustrated with themselves and a shocking pitch.
After the break play-maker Jacob Merrick broke the deadlock with wonderful vision and a fantastic left footed lob over the keeper after Bright Temba had done some good work up front.
Our boys kept chasing and putting pressure on Bognor but with only one sub they tired and after 81 minutes some slack marking at a corner and a well worked set-piece gave the whites a lifeline. Heads went down and concentration wavered and a deflected shot gave Bognor the lead on 83 and another deflection sealed it with 4 minutes to go.
A disappointing finish but probably the most organised, disciplined and workmanlike display of the season for the Borough boys which deserved a lot more than it got.
