Whitehawk 1 - 6 Eastbourne Borough
A very clinical, professional performance over at The Enclosed Ground on Monday night gave the Ryman 18s their fourth away win on the bounce against Whitehawk.
Once again though, the score didn't really reflect the story of the game. Sami El-Abd's young side were, for the first 40 minutes, organised, tough to break down and competitive. They had a definite game plan to defend up the slope, get in all square or close to that at the half then attack down the hill in the second. Although on the break they had a couple of chances which were dealt with well by a very solid Boro' back four.
Unfortunately (for them anyway) a great first league strike of the season - a volley from the edge of the box from midfielder Steve Turner broke the deadlock on 39 and you could actually see the belief disappear from the Whitehawk lads after defending so well for so long. While the home side were still dwelling on their misfortune, a cross from overlapping full back James Coyle was met at the near post by Corey Wheeler who headed in for his first of the night. One second after the restart the ref blew for half time and both sides' team talks were dramatically changed!
As pointed out in that team talk the next goal would be vital and Jacob Merrick danced his way through the defence and round the Whitehawk keeper for a brilliant goal on 50 minutes to effectively seal the game.
Josh Pickering powered his way through a gap made by a good Bright Temba decoy run and smashed the ball home in the 59th minute for a fourth then on 70 a through ball from Abdoul Diallo, returning after 6 months out, found another good run by Bright who slotted away the 5th.
Whitehawk notched a consolation 10 minutes from time and Corey got his second of the night converting a cross from Josh into the net with his face.
12 points out of 12 not a bad run and hopefully the away form can be continued at Priory Lane next Wednesday against County cup finalists Bognor. 7:45 KO
Cranemark Ltd Man of the Match was skipper George Carroll with every single member of the team a very close second.
